U16’s players Trinity Jae-Elliott and Layla Buxton both featured in the U16’s SHWGL before competing for the first team only 24 hours later.

The team put in an excellent performance as they went on to lift the cup. However, only one day later they were called up to play in a first-team fixture against Wyke Wanderers.

Playing against adults, most of which far older than them, the girls performed exceptionally, with Trinity even bagging a goal on her debut.

Speaking on the spectacle, first-team coach Kieron Lee said: “Both u16 players got a call up to play in a first team fixture this Sunday.”

“They both did themselves proud, with striker Trinity even scoring on her debut.

“Trinity worked tirelessly and didn't look fazed. Layla grew into it, after having a couple of decent challenges she really settled into the game.”

Discussing the decision, Lee said: “The club always looks to give youngsters a chance when possible. What a weekend for them both.”

Chairman Dave Higgins said: “Over the past 15 years we are proud of the fact that we have offered a genuine pathway for junior players to progress to senior football.

“Over the years many of our senior players including some that are still with us today have progressed through the age groups.

“We want to see 8 & 9 year olds joining the club and seeing that they can progress with a goal of playing for the First team.”

On the decision to play U16 players in the first team set-up he said: “Over the past couple of years we have tried to involve our U16's and U18's with the senior section and will hope to reap the rewards next season when we form a senior Development team to add to our Reserve and First team squads"
