A below par performance from Sheffield Wednesday Ladies Reserves saw them slump to a 3-2 defeat against Socrates.

Wednesday Ladies took a deserved lead in the 24th minute of the game, when a ball forward by Charlotte Harris found Michaela Barrett, who brilliantly took it past two defenders and slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

After Wednesday took the lead, Socrates began to gain some momentum which caused Abbie Timson to make a double save to preserve Wednesday’s lead.

Socrates managed to equalise in the 48th minute of the game after a mistake by the Wednesday defence was pounced upon by the Socrates striker.

Seven minutes into the second half, Socrates whipped the ball in from a corner that was flicked on leading to a goalmouth scramble and Socrates taking the lead for the first time in the game.

After the hosts took the lead, the game became quite fierce which led to the referee in the 85th minute initially giving Wednesday Ladies a free kick for a pull back on Barrett but on closer inspection he decided to give the Owlesses a penalty.

The penalty was taken by Mika Russell who saw it saved by the Socrates goalkeeper but Michaela Barrett tapped in the rebound to put Wednesday back on level terms.

This wouldn’t last long as Wednesday Ladies conceded a free kick right outside the 18 yard box. The free kick was swung into the box and managed to find the back of the net after missing a few bodies in the box.

Wednesday Ladies couldn’t find another goal before the referee blew his whistle to end the game leading to the Reserves still looking for their first win away from home after losing 3-2.

Barrett was awarded the POTM after her performance scoring two goals and winning a penalty.

The next game for the Wednesday Ladies reserves will be away against Staveley Miners welfare on Sunday 27th October.
