Sheffield Wednesday ladies Reserves managed to claim a well deserved 7-0 victory away at Staveley Miners Welfare.

Wednesday Ladies took the lead in the 20th minute after a flurry of chances were missed by the Owlesses players. Michaela Barrett intercepted the ball from a mis-hit pass from Staveley, took it past the last defender and directed it into the bottom left corner.

Staveley managed to give Wednesday Ladies a scare at the end of the first half after they fashioned a glorious opportunity, where they were one-on one-with goalkeeper Abbie Timson, who came out on top after making a great save which helped the reserves keep their one-goal lead going into half-time.

After the break, Wednesday Ladies doubled their lead in the 54th after Monica Charles flicked the ball onto Ellie McHugh who smashed the ball into the bottom corner giving the Owlesses some breathing room.

This score didn’t last long as Wednesday Ladies made it three after scoring two goals in as many minutes when Barrett brilliantly took it past two Staveley defenders and smashed the ball above the shot-stopper and into the back of the net.

In the 61st minute of the game, Wednesday Ladies scored their fourth goal of the game when a ball played over the top was won by Charles, who beat a challenge from the home side defender and slotted it in at the near post.

Staveley’s best chance of the game came in the 70th minute when their attacker put the ball wide of the post from a one-on-one opportunity.

A big round of applause was given for goalkeeper Leah Kitson as she replaced Abbie Timson to get her first minutes of the season.

Mika Russell then managed to add her name to the scoresheet as she scored directly from a corner after a slight deflection from the Staveley player, putting Wednesday Ladies 6-0 up with six minutes of the second 45 minutes remaining.

Wednesday Ladies added one more goal before the final whistle when Ruby Whelan scored her first goal outside the box on her weaker foot to finish off an outstanding performance by Wednesday Ladies.

The referee blew the whistle and that was that. Wednesday got their first away win of the season and in some style. Beating a good side, scoring seven goals and keeping their first clean sheet. A game where everyone involved should be really proud of their efforts.

Ellie McHugh was given POTM after a wonderful performance after scoring two goals and also grabbing an assist.

The next Wednesday Ladies Reserves game will be against Chesterfield Ladies FC U23s on 3rd November.
